Trump called ‘national security threat’ as impeachment looms

Donald Trump should be impeached because he poses a “continuing threat” to US national security, a senior Democrat insisted on Sunday ahead of what is expected to be a historic lawmakers’ vote against the US president.

The US House of Representatives is expected to vote within days to send Mr Trump for trial in the Senate, in what would be only the third such action against a US president after Andrew Johnson in 1868 and Bill Clinton in 1998. The move towards a vote comes after the House judiciary committee on Friday split along party lines to approve two articles of impeachment against Mr Trump, the 45th president.

Jerrold Nadler, the New York Democrat who heads the House judiciary committee, on Sunday said the House had to impeach Mr Trump because he remained a threat to US elections and democracy.

“This is a crime in progress against the constitution and against the American democracy,” Mr Nadler, who wrote the articles of impeachment against the president, told ABC News. “We cannot take the risk that the next election will be corrupted through foreign interference solicited by the president.”

With the outcome in the House practically preordained, attention shifted over the weekend to how long a new year Senate trial should be, given the approaching presidential election next November.

While Democrats hold 233 seats in the 435-seat House, the odds are extremely low that he will be convicted in the 100-seat Senate, because 20 Republicans would have to abandon the president to convict him in a trial that requires a two-thirds majority to remove him from office.

Mr Trump and his Republican allies have described the impeachment process as a “hoax” perpetrated by Democrats who are angry at losing the White House in 2016 and worried about losing again in 2020. The Democrats argue that Mr Trump tried to solicit interference into the 2020 election from Ukraine, in what they describe as a brazen move that came just one day after Robert Mueller, the special prosecutor who led the Russia probe, testified before Congress on July 24.

Mr Trump faces impeachment over his July 25 call with Volodymyr Zelensky, in which he asked the president of Ukraine to probe Joe Biden, the former vice-president and his potential Democratic rival in 2020, and investigate a debunked conspiracy theory that Ukraine, and not Russia, interfered in the 2016 election.

The second article of impeachment accuses him of obstructing the investigation.

“It was the day after Bob Mueller testified, the day after Donald Trump felt that he was beyond accountability for his first misconduct, that he was back on the phone, this time with President Zelensky, trying to get that country to help him cheat in the next election,” Adam Schiff, the Democrat who led the impeachment inquiry, told ABC News on Sunday.
