CWU Undergraduate Won Another Honorable Mention
at 30th Han Suyin International Translation Contest
On November 19, 2018, the Award Ceremony for the “Thirtieth Han Suyin International Translation Contest” was convened at Beijing International Convention Center. Miss Yang Jiaying, a Grade-2015 English major of the Department of Foreign Languages of China Women’s University (CWU), won an Honorable Mention in the English-Chinese translation of this event. The list of winners has been published in Issue 6 of Chinese Translators Journal and on its WeChat Public Platform. Before this, CWU students had won two Honorable Mentions and one Third Prize in this annual contest in 2013, 2014 and 2016 respectively.
The 2018 Contest was jointly held by the Translators Association of China and Guangdong University of Foreign Studies, with special support from the International Federation of Translators (FIT). The Contest, which was started by the Translators Association of China in 1989 under the patronage of the celebrated Chinese-British writer Mme. Han Suyin (Elisabeth Comber, 1917-2012) and known as “Han Suyin Youth Award Translation Contest” ever since, was in 2018 officially renamed “Han Suyin International Translation Contest”. Besides the traditional Chinese-English and English-Chinese translations, the contest now also includes two-way translations from Chinese into four other languages, i.e., French, Russian, Spanish and Arabic, and vice versa.
More than 10,000 contestants from across China, as well as the US, Russia, the UK, Canada, Australia, Argentina, Egypt, France, and Singapore, participated in the Contest, which is historically unprecedented. Having gone through the strict screening process of initial evaluation, re-evaluation and final review, 382 contestants stood out as winners of First, Second and Third Prizes and Honorable Mentions.
The text for the English-Chinese translation this year is adapted from an article in Foreign Affairs, titled “How Should Governments Address Inequality?: Putting Piketty Into Practice”, by Melissa S. Kearney. Mr. Ding Zhangang, Associate Professor of the Department of Foreign Languages, acted as Miss Yang’s adviser for the contest.
The Thirty First Han Suyin International Translation Contest in 2019 is to be jointly held by the Translators Association of China, Beijing Foreign Studies University, and Fujian Normal University.
Congratulations to Miss Yang!
