CWU Teacher Ding Zhangang Won First Prize at National Translation Contest
Last month, the Ninth “Zhengzhou University—The World of English Cup” National Translation Contest came to a successful conclusion. Mr. Ding Zhangang, associate professor from the Department of Foreign Languages of China Women’s University (CWU), stood out among the contestants and won the first prize in English-Chinese translation, with his translated version of The Whoomper Factor (《烈雪之威》) having gone through the strict screening process of initial evaluation, re-evaluation and final review. The version is carried in the October 2018 issue of The World of English, one of the most popular magazines for Learners of English in China.
“The World of English Cup” Translation Contest, which made its debut in 2010, is sponsored by The World of English Inc., a subsidiary of The Commercial Press, and jointly held by the Social Science Translation Committee of Translators Association of China, the National Translation Test and Appraisal Center, and China Association for Comparative Studies of English and Chinese. Over the past eight years, the number of participants of the annual contest has reached a new high each year, for it has become one of the most prestigious translation contests in the country.
In recent years, The World of English Inc. has partnered with a different university each year to organize the contest, which includes translating an English article into Chinese or a Chinese article into English. Contestants can choose to do either one or both. As the co-organizer this year, Zhengzhou University got the naming right of the contest and assumed the responsibility of screening preliminarily the submitted versions. To ensure the authority and credibility of the contest, a number of well-known translation experts from all over the country were invited for the re-evaluation and final review process.
Mr. Ding, who teaches English majors translation and interpretation at CWU, has engaged himself wholeheartedly in his work and made outstanding achievements. As Director of the Research Center for Translation Studies of CWU (RCTS) and a front-line teacher, he and his team have translated and published a lot of foreign literary and academic works in recent years, and coached about twenty CWU students to obtain their CATTI (China Accreditation Test for Translators and Interpreters) certificates and another seven students to win prizes at different national or international translation contests, including the Han Suyin International Translation Contest, the Cross-Strait Interpretation Contest, and the Beijing Language and Culture University International Translation and Interpreting Competition.
