Dr. Miller, Social Work Expert from Smith College, Visits CWU
On December 1, Joshua Miller, doctor of social work at Smith College, Northampton, the U.S., visited China Women’s University (CWU), and delivered a speech on the theme of “The Use of Groups to Foster Resiliency”.
CWU Vice-president Liu Meng warmly welcomed Miller and introduced him to the campus. Postgraduates and undergraduates majoring in social work participated in the meeting. Based on his own research and other scholars’ theories, Miller illustrated his practical experience in using groups to foster resiliency after disaster. After the meeting, Liu took part in a discussion with Miller on the academic and student exchanges, and postgraduate education and research cooperation.
Miller has engaged in teaching and writing on racial discrimination for more than 25 years. As a visiting scholar at Beijing Normal University, he mainly studied the post-disaster psychological construction and the resiliency fostering of individuals, families, and communities. Miller was also personally involved in consulting for disasters including hurricane Katarina, 9/11, and the Wenchuan earthquake, and participated in relief work.
Smith College was found in 1871. It ranked second among women’s colleges, and was named as a top-20 most famous higher education institute in the U.S.. It was also well known as one of the Top-Seven Women’s Colleges worldwide.
